NZ SPEEDBOAT HISTORY

Clipper Replica

David Potter launched his new replica hydroplane last Friday2nd March 2018 at Blue Lake, Rotorua. The original boat started life as Atom III, designed by Horry Savage and built by Arnold Johnson in 1947. It raced under the New Brighton banner. In 1949 it was bought by Murray Williams (Father of Peter Williams Mod-H Hydro Clipper). Murray later moved from the New Brighton Club and raced for the Palmerston North and Wanganui Clubs. Murray did extensive alterations to Clipper during the period of time he owned it and won many Trophies during its luxurious career topping it of with the Masport Cup in 1954. Murray had several motors with horse power veering from 85hp to 114hp. A H Scholes from the Wellington Club bought Clipper in 1955 and raced it into the 1960’s. David’s replica is based on the period when Murray Williams had it and I am sure will bring back a lot of memories from an earlier age of speedboat racing in NZ. Well done David.
